TTS Liftec Oy has won a substantial contract from UPM-Kymmene Seaways, one of the world’s leading forest products groups.
The contract is for the supply of 200 RoRo cassettes that will be used for forestry product’s, such as paper and timber, traffic from Finland to Santander and el Ferrol in Spain.
The TTS Liftec cassette system is a unique large unit handling system having up to 80-tonne load capacity, comparing favourably to the typical 60-tonne capacity.
“The extra capacity offered by our system brings many advantages for shipowners including high operational efficiency, shorter turnaround time and a better use of space in the ship when compared with other large unit systems,” said Tatu Miikkulainen, managing director, TTS Liftec Oy. “Stevedores also see many benefits including efficient and fast StoRo and RoRo operation because of manoeuvrability and low maintenance demand.”
The use of cassettes and translifters will replace the conventional use of tractors and trailer sets common in most Spanish terminal operations. It will be the first time that this equipment has been deployed in a Spanish port.
“An ever-increasing share of world trade is carried in containers, an industry that brings with it huge demand for terminal efficiency, low cost and environmental sustainability,” says Miikkulainen. “In order to be successful, suppliers need to commit to developing smarter and more efficient products. TTS Liftec is a clear market leader, with products that have a proven applicability in both container terminals and RoRo operations in ports. The company will deliver over 800 cassettes this year.”

About TTS Liftec
TTS Liftec designs and delivers systems for loading and unloading ships in port, a business area in which TTS is expanding, in line with other TTS activities in mobile terminal systems.
The TTS Liftec portfolio includes systems for container and cargo cassette handling, the majority of which have been so far sold to European ports and harbours. The company also has extensive service and aftersales capabilities.
TTS has addressed the European Union’s initiative to develop ‘motorways of the sea’ by optimising the intermodal transhipment of goods. TTS has played an integral role in the plan since its inception in 1996, when the Improved Port Ship Interface (IPSI) project was conceived as a result of an EU green paper that discussed the relief of the predicted road transportation pressure in the future. IPSI was devised to make the transportation of goods by sea as cost-effective as land-based methods.
